Finding Dr. Bergstrom was a fortuitous accident. [Working with her] my healthcare was not just about drugs. My healthcare was about total life, my diet, sleep, stress, chiropractic and massage.

In the past year my weight has dropped by 50 pounds. My knees hurt less. The number of medications I take has dropped from around 12 to only 6. My pants size has gone from 50 to 42. My A1C is [down to] 6.1. My digestive issues have cleared up. I had suffered from either diarrhea or constipation for over 20 years. I have a lifting of brain fog and an increase of energy.

Functional Medicine deals with the ongoing health and function of my body and every system within it.

Our approach

Functional medicine is about finding the true cause of illness so that we can treat the cause and cure the illness. To help you do this we use your personal story, state-of-the-art lab testing and a team approach to help you achieve the optimum health you deserve.

Each patient’s journey begins with a nutrition program and customized supplements to get to the root of your problem. Together, we work on movement medicine and creating a healthy environment. As we create a program for your body to heal we teach you, every step of the way, how to apply these principles to yourselves and others for a lifetime.

As we work together, you will find a newer healthier you. But even better, you will receive an education that will benefit you and your family for years to come. We want to give you your independence from medicines, from doctors and even from us.

Let me let you in on a little secret. I have another goal. I want to spread the word far and wide that there is a way to feel vibrant and youthful naturally. Once you know how amazing it feels to reverse illness and find energy that you thought was lost forever I hope that you will want to share what you have learned and help others too.

I came to see Dr. Bergstrom because I was looking for a physician that would do both natural medicine and regular medicine. What I liked most in working with Dr. Bergstrom was her listening to me and hearing what I am saying to conclusion. The most important changes I noticed were pain from back tumor reduced significantly after acupuncture. Neck and joint pain and movement resolved better than I had experienced in years. She does complete diagnosis and testing of issues. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Bergstrom to others.

Functional medicine

In functional medicine we look for underlying causes of disease rather than just treating the symptoms.

Conventional doctors (regular MDs) use prescriptions to treat symptoms. Unfortunately, symptoms are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to chronic disease. I completely understand their thinking, since I was trained in a conventional medical school and practiced for years in a regular family medicine clinic. The thing is, these medications don’t fix the problem, and they often don’t even make people feel better.

In functional medicine we take a different approach. Rather than covering up symptoms, we look for each individual person’s causes of inflammation and disease using the most up to date scientific research.

Functional medicine involves partnering with a medical detective, your functional medicine practitioner. Your functional medicine provider will use your personal story, dietary change and state-of-the-art lab testing to find out what your body’s triggers are.

Once we know your triggers, we remove the things that are irritating your body, and we replace the things that your body is missing. We remove hidden infections, allergens, toxic chemicals, and foods that you are sensitive to. If needed, we replace digestive enzymes, vitamins and nutrients, and healthy bacteria. We also balance hormones and brain chemistry.

Is your body suffering because you're not producing enough Prozac or Lipitor? No! But you may be missing essential vitamins or nutrients and we can figure out which ones you need.

In functional medicine we help find the real cause of disease, so that you can truly heal.

I would recommend Dr. Bergstrom to others. I needed an education on how disease process can be caused or aggravated by inflammation. It is easier to be compliant with treatment when you know why you are doing something.

I appreciated that Dr. Bergstrom brought me into the conversation about my healthcare. We discussed options and the rationale behind those options. It was left to me to decide.

There was a fair exchange of ideas. I felt like I was a member of my healthcare team. She isn’t focused on one mode of treatment.

Inflammation

What is inflammation?
Inflammation is your body’s natural response to an injury.

Why do we have inflammation?
In a onetime situation (acute inflammation), it’s a good thing. You may have pain and swelling in your ankle after a sprain. That tells you to take it easy while creating a natural splint and sending chemicals to the area to help the healing process. When you have a cut some of those chemicals may help to keep out bad bacteria and viruses.

When is inflammation bad?
In some cases, inflammation becomes chronic, which means that it sticks around for a long time. This can happen when something is triggering our immune system to go off as if we were getting injuries every day. When that happens our body never has time to finish healing. The chemicals that carried helpful signals when we had one simple cut now can end up causing damage all over our body.

Damage from chronic inflammation is the cause of most of the chronic diseases that threaten our health today including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, autoimmune disease, thyroid problems and gut problems such as IBS. Removing the triggers that flare up our immune system can allow our bodies to heal.

What are common triggers for inflammation?
Stress, nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, bad fats, poor sleep, toxins, infections and an unhealthy gut are at the top of the list. The functional medicine approach uses your personal story, dietary change and state-of-the-art lab testing to find out what your body’s triggers are so we can remove them and let your body heal.
